What is Alkaline Phosphatase ?

  • As enzyme that helps in break-down of protein .
  • This enzyme is mostly made in Liver but some quantities are made in bones & 
  • intestine .

Why is this test done ?

  • This test is part of Liver Function Tests .
  • This test provides information about liver , gallbladder of bone disease . 

Is any special instruction given before the test ?

  • 8 - 12 hours of fasting is required before this test .
  • sample should be taken in the morning after over night Fasting .

 What are normal values of ALP ?

  • normal values  25 to 100 U/L

 What disease can cause increase in ALP ?

  • Liver disease like , Hepatitis , gallstone , cirrhosis or Hepatocellular cancer .
  • Bone disease like , paget's disease osteomalacia , or Hyperparathyroidism .
  • Certain disease like , Heart attack , sepsis , or Infections .

 Decreased :

  • patient of malnutrition
  • Intestinal disease like celiac disease .
  • Deficiencies Like Scurvy .
